Beware Off-Brand USB Type-C Cables and Adapters

This is a public service announcement. If you have a new phone/tablet/laptop that uses the new USB Type-C standard, use only the original cable/charger/adapter that came with your device. Using an off-brand cable can fry your charger. That means if you plug your phone into your computer, a crappy cable can permanently destroy all your computer's USB ports at once.

Apparently, most manufacturers (yes I said MOST) fail to include sufficient resistors in their USB-C cables. These cables can overload any device you plug them into causing irreparable physical damage.

If you need additional cables/adapters for your USB-C device, a Google engineer has evaluated many of the products available on Amazon (here's a link). As you can see, most cables are NOT SAFE. If you can't use the original cables that came with your device, make sure you stick to the products that received 5 stars. Otherwise, you're just asking for trouble.
